Chuck Swindoll Jr. — Cancer, Mushrooms & Leaving the Church
|
Chuck Swindoll Jr. spent 15 years in ministry alongside his father. Here's what he told me... "It wasn't until cancer came along and said, 'I'm gonna kill you now,' that everything changed. I'd been involved in health for the better part of five, six years. I was going to the gym twice a week. Running five days a week, at least three miles a run. Eating nothing but healthy food, organic food. No soda. No coffee. No alcohol, no drugs, no sugar, no desserts. As clean a life as you could live. And I still got cancer. That's how tied I was in Christianity. Jesus was my savior, and he was coming back to save us all. That was it. And you cannot break that kind of ideology in someone without a real sledgehammer to the brain. That's what cancer was. The most honest friend I ever had was cancer. I hope to never see them again. But I wouldn't replace it for anything." That's the first two minutes. Then I asked him about the mushroom trip where a voice asked him one question, and that question took down his whole religion.
